Goals
The goal of this program is to increase student awareness of a global community and their roles and responsibilities within this community.
There are several forms of community of which a person is a member. A family, a school, a church, a town, a state, a country are all communities in which each individual must learn to function. A person must recognize their relationship to other members of the community, communicate with those other members, and contribute to the functionality of the community.
In our modern times, students must learn to view themselves as members of many communities, the largest and most complicated being the global community. As communication technologies make interactions between cultures increasingly common, students are going to need to have the knowledge of these cultures necessary to recognize relationships and how best to interact with people of these cultures.
It is recognized that the most effective learning happens when the student directly experiences the differences and commonalities. Unfortunately, not all students are able to go to places far from home to have this direct contact with people of other cultures. In this case, another option is to interact with other cultures through the technology available to us today. Computers, through internet connections, allow students to actively interact with information, if not real people. Though ideally, students will be participating in communication with individuals from other cultures.
I have been given the opportunity to visit many places and people that others will never have the opportunity to experience. It is my pleasure to be able to share my experiences with others and allow students and teachers to take another step toward a global perspective.
