Excerpt from
"Martin and the Angel"
children's short story...
. . . Keeping a watchful eye toward the darkened front
room, Martin backed slowly away from the table, clutching the pie tin and its luscious
cargo for all he was worth. One step at a time, he moved, toe-heel, toe-heel, not daring
to breathe, toe-heel, toe-heel, as he reversed his previous path, escape and triumph just
a footstep away . . . story

Gas on, Brain Off! Funny
short story about every commuters dream - driving in a real
demolition derby...
...I have to admit my biggest concern was the car window. In destruction derby driving, one does not use car doors to enter the car.
Wise drivers have reinforced the car body by welding the doors shut with a large piece of re-bar - great for
safety - hell on the hips. To enter the car with the doors welded shut, one is required to climb up on the windowsill, and slither into the car interior like a lithe and willowy snake.

I knew it was going to be a bad day when I realized I had
slept through my alarm, but I had promised to help my son enter his free "Pepsi
Points" into the computer so I got up, ran a comb through my hair and that was the
last time I was fresh that day. Ever had one of those days? Freshless
I heard voices calling to me in the breath of the wind.
My bare toes scratched deeper into the warm sand, instinctively seeking a
cooler level beneath the burning surface, as I turned to inspect the
scenery. The blowing dust settled briefly, revealing the distant,
unfamiliar mountains. Sharp crags were filled with shades of red and gold
and outlined in purple shadows. Turning, I took in the foreign landscape
that surrounded me with growing unease.
The whispering voices, many now, muttered and
rustled the air with words I could only barely discern.
"Dragon, ...over there...come."
Breaking Hearts....true
story, sad day.
Monday, April 3, 1989 was extremely normal in the Campbell
household. Wake my four-year-old son, dress my two-year-old daughter, bathe my almost
two-month-old daughter and assure the two-year-old (once again) that yes, breakfast will
be available at day care, no, I didn't know what they were having, we would just have to
wait and see - then listen to her litany of what she does like for breakfast (oatmeal),
and doesn't care for breakfast (toast) as she pushed her way excitedly into her t-shirt
and cords. ...a sad story, an unforgettable day

What do you think Americans fear most? Death? Flying? The Dark? How about my favorite
-- big hairy spiders? Nope. Americans fear speaking in public
more than they fear flying to their death in the dark with a big hairy spider.

I live life in the fast lane.... literally. Like the carnival barker says, "...you
pays yer money, and you takes yer chances." I had been playing the odds
successfully for some time, but eventually, the piper demands to be paid. And, like so
many other criminals, it was no big event that tripped me up, but rather, a little thing.
