Our Shetland Sheep Ours is NASSA Flock #74, having raised Shetland sheep since 1990. Our flock is much smaller than it once was, but we still keep a few purebred Shetlands to explore the heritability of horns, fleece type, and other unique attributes of these producers of colored fleece. Shetlands are classified as "Northern European Short-tails" much like Icelandics. Full grown ewes weigh about 80 lbs, short tails don't need docking. If you have a small farm, like to spin and want hardy, easy to care for sheep, do look into keeping a few Shetlands. They also do well in producing meat lambs when bred to Clun Forest or similar meat sires.
"Agouti" fleece samples are below...this is where the pigment turns on and of in the fibers based on time of the year...at least that's the way it works on our farm!
