Deviant Cell presents Backyard as Band of the Month

Backyard is a hard hitting "Punk" if you will, rock band coming straight out'a Centralia Washington. They have one mass production CD release so far and continue to kick the shit out of the local music scene. With a steady flow of bangs and bruises, front man Fil Nontell keeps the pace for the crowd to follow during their sets. Don't see one of their shows if energy, good song writing, and genuine enthusiasm for music does not agree with you.

Excerpt from House 42 Live Review from The Matrix show on 3/11/00
Backyard is a 3 piece punk band out of the twin cities as well. Just like the first 2, the vocals were very clear but it was evident towards the end of the set that doing vocals for 2 bands might have taken it's toll on Fil's larynx. In addition the vocals were melodic and flowed smoothly with the music. This band had great stage presence as Fil was jumping around like a madman making Backyard's performance that much more entertaining and a great show as well...

Kill MTV review by Roger Taylor

Backyard- Self Titled

This cd opens with a song called Pit Stick. I was surprised by this cd. Most of the songs are fairly medium to fast paced straight forward Punk Rawk, but then Fil, Mark, and Zane had to do something I'm not entirely used to. They threw in some punk ass harmonies. "Bozo's Parade" starts up with a bass groove which leads to a drum/bass rythym section with little or no guitar up until the exploding chorus. I'm not much for slower songs but these guys keep the listener's attention. "Another Crappy Pop Song" has to be my favorite song on this cd, they capture much of the punks attitude towards trendy music much like the bullshit Mtv claims is punk but we all know the truth. "No Remains" starts out with some damn good drumming that leads into the straight forward lyrics with the shouting back up vocals. Ya have to love that!!! "Ride My Bike" makes me wish I was a kid again and is a real catchy tune. Overall I am glad I purchased this cd and Fil, Mark, and Zane are great musicians.

STICK FANZINE : Backyard—Nameless for the Masses, Property Line Dispute 1998, **

I would have to say that these guys have some good material. This tape shows a rough example of what these guys have to offer. I’m not sure what makes this unique. I think that it might be Backyard’s singer and guitar player Fil Nontell’s voice. It can be heard throughout the record in different volumes and tones. In songs like "Another Crappy Pop Song" and "One Last Drink," Fil goes from calmly singing to yelling aggressively.

Besides the fact that the recording seems to have been rushed, there are some really good songs on here. A couple of my favorites are "One Last Drink," "No Place Like Home," and "USA." There are a couple of songs that I didn’t really care for either though. It’s really hard to pin point Backyard’s main influences. I heard the likes of The Ramones, Operation Ivy, and on "USA" Modest Mouse. Other than that their sound is pretty fresh.

If you get the chance to see these guys live I would do so. 1) It’s not everyday you get the chance to see a band from Centralia, WA and 2) Their shows have a very raw feel to them. Most likely due to Fil releasing stress through his singing and Mark’s repetitive bashing of the drums. -Tonan
