Red Fox

The Red Fox
The red fox seen in the digital image was taken within the boundaries of Mt. Rainier. Foxes are in the canine family. They feed on small rodents, birds, and are not afraid to follow packs of wolfs, or coyotes looking for a free handout after the pack has killed and buried or what ever is left over from a kill. They are opportunists and hunt alone. The female will usually stay at their den having up to 4-6 pups in the spring and will remain with them until the are weaned and have been thought to tend for themselves. This usually after the following year when a new litter of pups is born into this world. The phrase "cleaver as a fox" comes from their ability to adapt to rural and even to urban environments, where they get a bad reputation for getting an easy meal of chickens and rodents.
