Welcome to my web site, which is devoted to my ancestors back to John Hoyt, of whom I am a direct descendant. Due to space restrictions, this site only shows my direct family ancestors. I hope you will benefit from the information I present here.
I started this John Hoyt family research back in 1977, when my daughter asked where we came from. And it has become an every day adventure, trying to find out where we did come from.
This site will be updated as new information becomes available. Additions/Corrections are always gladly appreciated.

We have seen the name spelled in many different ways; as, Hoyt, Hoit, Hoyte, Hoite, Hoytt, Hoyet, Hoyett, Hoytte, Hoyght, Haight, Hight, Hite, Hyatt, Hayte, Haite, Hayt, Haigh, and Hayts. In the earlier periods of this country's history, there seemed to be no settled orthography for proper names, especially surnames, and each clerk and recorder spelt as he pleased. Sometimes individuals even wrote their own names differently at different times, and some evidently did not know the proer method of spelling them. Whether all of those whose names have been spelled in either of the las eight ways above mentioned are descended from the Hoyts, we cannot say. The three most common ways of spelling the name in the United States, at the present time, are Hoyt, Hoit and Hoitt.

My line started changing when Moses Hoyt was a taverner in Plattsburgh, NY., 1827. It was Moses Hoyt in the 1830 census of Plattsburgh, Clinton, N.Y. He bought land in DuPage County, Illinois in the fall of 1837, as Moses Hoit. In 1843, Moses Hoit of DuPage county and State of Illinois was bound by the Probate court as surety in the Probate of his son, George Washington Hoit, late of Dundee in Kane county and State of Illinois, estate. Sarah Hoit, widow, applied for Letters of administration. George William Hoit, son of George Washington Hoit, kept and used the name Hoit.

Somewhere in the early 1800s, Nicholas Smith Hoyt decided that his last name looked better in script when written with an “I”, instead of a “Y”. So he changed his name and all of his children were given the name HOIT.
